Should students listen to music on their Chrome books in the Art Room?

I asked this group of fifth and sixth grade artists to problem solve our art class behavior and volume issues.  One of their suggestions was to be allowed to listen to music on their individual ChromeBooks while working.  There are obvious pros and cons to this practice and it is clearly not suited to all art lessons (i.e. splatter-painting...), but our trial run was relatively successful.  I recognize the challenge of monitoring what students are listening to and students definitely don't realize how loud their voices are when they have their headphones on.  This lesson is a focused, independent project, but being plugged in may detract from meaningful peer support and conversations around their work.

What do you think? Should students be allowed to listen to music on individual devices during art class?

  1. I think that kids should be able to listen to music because sometimes it calms kids down but if they can't handle it they just simply turn off the music.

  2. It depends on the purpose of the lesson, but in certain contexts allowing them to listen to music can be hugely beneficial in a number of ways, including: (1) it may get their creative juices flowing and provide inspiration, (2) it can aid focus and concentration, (3) it will allow some students to feel personally connected to the classroom in a different way, (4) it reinforces your trust in them, (5) it provides an opportunity for them to exercise choice.

I used to let students listen to music in math class when they were working independently. If it was something involving collaboration, then no individual music. As for ensuring it's appropriate, if a student crosses the line then they lose the privilege. Ultimately they almost surely have access to online music outside of the classroom, so it's not a unique risk that you are creating.

  3. Yes because it is calming and it helps students focus while working.

  4. I think that kids should be able to listen to music in art class, but it depends on the project, if you are drawing I think that it would be okay but if you are painting or working with other people I don't think that the music should be on. I personally love listening to music, so I love when we get to listen but when there are messy projects around let's turn the chrome books off!
