Paper Quilling

Upper unit artists learned about paper quilling.  We used toothpicks, dowels and pencils as our quills.  Students worked on two assignments.  One was to create an original design or picture using different shapes and colors of paper rolls glued to a card.  Then they experimented with making quilled paper snowflakes.   This project ties in with the classroom study of Colonial America.

Field Trip to Watercolor Exhibit

Upper unit students took a field trip to the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe.  Currently, the Art Center has an exhibition of watercolor paintings on display in the gallery.  Students took a guided tour of the exhibit, where a docent gave tips for understanding watercolor paintings and techniques.  They also had the chance to take a workshop with watercolor artist Sandy Nobel.  We learned about negative space, hard and soft edges, geometric and freeform or organic shapes, wet and dry brush and watercolor washes.
