What Lifts You? Collaborative Zentangle Feather Wings Inspired by Kelsey Montague

Street artist Kelsey Montague creates large interactive murals of wings for people to stand in front of and ponder the question "What lifts you?"
Montague writes,
As many of you know I started the What Lifts You campaign last year to provide people with the opportunity to share more about what inspires them in their life… I never expected the response I would receive. After just a week in NYC my first set of What Lifts You wings had a line down the street of people wanting to take a picture with the piece and post about what inspires them in their life. I realized that people love the opportunity to become a ‘living work of art’ by stepping into the wings and they love getting the chance to talk about what inspires them in their lives!

We created Zentangle Feathers to piece together to create a collaborative wing mural inspired by Montague's work.

Rainbow Week Color Wheel Collage

It is Rainbow Week at Waitsfield School! Each day the school lunch is centered around a different color of the rainbow and all of the students wear that color. (Today was green day!)  Kindergarten artists worked collaboratively to make a Color Wheel Collage by finding examples of each color in magazines.  They had a little help from some first and second graders to finish the collage.

Paul Klee City Collaborative Mural

First and second graders learned about Paul Klee's painting "Castle and Sun," and created collages inspired by this painting. Click here to see this work!  Then we used cardboard scraps to construct this collaborative city mural.

"Mannequin Challenge"

Students are not supposed to have iPods or phones out at recess. However, after telling a student to put his device away, I realized that nearly the entire fifth and sixth grade group was working collaboratively on something called the "Mannequin Challenge." (Click here to learn more!)  I quickly gathered that the goal was to create a video of people staying as still as mannequins while life continues around them.  I allowed them to continue their project and film several takes and I captured this video of their Mannequin Challenge.

Fall tree cooperative paintings

First and second graders worked in groups to create these colorful fall trees. We talked about the importance of working together, sharing the materials and making sure that everyone participates. These skills are even more important than the final products that we create.

Dot Day!

Dot Day has come to Waitsfield School!  Each grade level will create different types of dot art, celebrating the Dot Day principles of Creativity, Courage and Collaboration.

Watch the video of Peter Reynolds' book "The Dot"

Third and fourth graders worked in groups to create giant dots!  They explored different techniques including splatter paint, color mixing and masking tape resist.

First and Second graders painted on large paper to explore many different types and sizes of dots.  They were inspired by the dots that Vashti paints in "The Dot."

Dot Day is coming to Waitsfield School!

International Dot Day is a day to celebrate CREATIVITY, COURAGE and COLLABORATION.  During the week of September 15th, all students will create artwork inspired by the message in Peter Reynolds' book The Dot:

"Make your mark and see where it takes you!"

And Remember... On Friday, September 19th, WEAR DOTS!

Let's see which classroom has the most Dot Day Spirit!
