Acceptance Affirmations

Each month Waitsfield School will focus on a different Social and Emotional Learning theme. This month's theme is ACCEPTANCE. After talking about what it means to accept yourself and accept others, students chose their own "Acceptance Affirmation" to write and paint on a puzzle piece.

Maker-in-Residence with Lucie deLaBruere

This year as our annual Artist-in-Residence we had Lucie deLaBruere visit our school. She worked with students K-6 to create interactive experiences using coding and circuitry.  Here are some of the projects students worked on:

Waitsfield Students Reach for the Stars!

Welcome back, Waitsfield School!
All students (even pre-K!) created a hand for our "Reach for the Stars" bulletin board. Students wrote their hopes and dreams for the school year on the stars.

The Global Cardboard Challenge

The Global Cardboard Challenge is an annual event presented by the Imagination Foundation, which celebrates children’s creativity and the role that communities can play in fostering it.  This event was inspired by the short film “Caine’s Arcade,” a story of a young boy’s cardboard creations.  This project encourages kids to collaborate, innovate and think outside the box.  Click here to learn more about the importance of creativity.

Dot Day!

Students at all levels will be celebrating Dot Week during the week of September 12th in Art Class and Library/Technology.  This special event is based on the book “The Dot,” by Peter Reynolds. It is a story that encourages artists to “just make a mark.”

International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009.
The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”.

What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.

And each year on International Dot Day – with the help of people just like you –the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.

We also used the Quiver app on the iPads to turn our dots three dimensional.

Empty Bowls Clay Project

Waitsfield students are in the midst of a fabulous Artist Residency with local potter Leslie Montalto.  All students, pre-K to grade 6 have worked with Leslie to make three types of bowls.  The first bowl is a simple pinch pot. The second is a slab bowl with printed texture. The third (and most students' favorite) is a bowl on the wheel.

In addition to working with Leslie in the art classroom, students also spent a day making site visits to other potters' studios or working on specific clay projects.  The various activities included:
  • Building a "pit fire" kiln at Leslie's house
  • Learning about the Raku process with "The Naked Potter" Luke Iannuzzi
  • Visit to Noel Bailey's pottery studio
  • Working on pottery wheels at Montpelier Mud Studio
  • Building clay bells with Katie Babic
  • Hand-building pocket planters with potter Bobbie Platt (and me!)
