Color wheels, Paint strips and Color Matching
Third and fourth graders learned all about the Color Wheel, color mixing and color matching. They had three challenges to complete as part of this unit:
1. Paint all 12 colors of the color wheel and create your own color wheel
2. Find a photo in a magazine and match several of the colors in the image (inspired by this very cool website, Design Seeds)
3. Create a paint strip with different tints or shades of the same color and name each of the hues

Rainbow Week Color Wheel Collage
It is Rainbow Week at Waitsfield School! Each day the school lunch is centered around a different color of the rainbow and all of the students wear that color. (Today was green day!) Kindergarten artists worked collaboratively to make a Color Wheel Collage by finding examples of each color in magazines. They had a little help from some first and second graders to finish the collage.

Color Mixing with Kindergarteners
Kindergarten Artists explored the wonderful world of Color Mixing today in Art Class! We examined the Color Wheel and discussed how we can mix the three PRIMARY COLORS to form all of the other colors on the Color Wheel.
We mixed colors using eye droppers and colored water. Then Kindergarteners gave their new color creations creative names, like "turquoise blurquoise."
After observing the color mixing process with the colored water, we painted squares using Red, Yellow and Blue liquid watercolors. Once again, Kindergarten artists observed the Primary colors mixing to form new colors.

Color Wheel Letters and Numbers inspired by Jasper Johns
The Color Wheel
First and second grade artists learned about the color wheel. We learned that each color has a complimentary color on the opposite side of the color wheel.
We also learned about artist Jasper Johns. Johns is a Pop Artist born in 1930. Some of his most famous works incorporate letters, numbers and bright primary and secondary colors.
First and second grade artists created letters and numbers inspired by Jasper Johns that show the color wheel and each pair of complimentary colors.

Color wheels
Students in grades 3 and 4 are learning to mix all colors on the color wheel using the three primary colors. We are practicing using proper color names in art class, ie. "yellow-green" versus "light-ish yellowy green-ish."

Sochi Olympic Patchwork Quilt Design
Fifth and sixth graders are working on creating a banner in the style of the Sochi Olympic patchwork quilt theme. On the Sochi banners, each diamond represents a pattern from a different region of Russia's traditional arts and crafts. Artists looked at these various patterns and chose analogous colors from the color wheel to create diamonds for our group project. Stay tuned to see the finished piece!
Here is the Sochi Olympic patchwork quilt design:
It is also used on the official uniform for staff and volunteers:
