Art in the Garden

With the garden in full bloom, how could we not take our art class outside?

First and second grade artists worked on drawing sunflowers from observation. We remind each other to Draw what you see, not what you know!

Third and fourth grade artists were asked to imagine that they had shrunken down to the size of a bug.  What would the world look like from this point of view? Has anyone from this generation seen   "Honey I Shrunk the Kids?"

Club Creativity!

Katie Babic and I worked with a small group of students who were interested in having more art and creativity opportunities.  We met once a week after school to explore a variety of arts media and creative processes.  After attending such an inspiring Learning and the Brain Conference, this group became our test case for some of the ideas we learned about fostering creativity and curiosity and supporting kids' passions.

A new session of Club Creativity will start after spring break!  Sign up to join us!
Here are some of the activities we explored:

Egg carton flower wreath
Clay creatures

Egg carton flowers

Making buttons!
Collage inspired by Van Gogh's Sunflowers

Van Gogh Sunflowers / Third and Fourth Grade FUNflowers

Third and fourth grade artists looked at Vincent van Gogh's famous sunflower paintings.  Then we thought about how we could transform the flowers into FUNflowers.  We challenged ourselves to draw the craziest flowers we could think of and add lots of color and detail!
Check out these fabulous FUNflowers!

Sunflowers in the garden

Despite this morning's frost, today was the most beautiful fall day.  Our wonderful school garden is in full bloom, especially the many varieties of sunflowers.  Kindergarten artists took advantage of these simple joys by making our art class outdoors.  We brought oil pastels and clip boards into the garden to work on drawing sunflowers from observations.
