Home
Inspired by "Home," by Carson Ellis
This magical picture book of different types of homes inspired this first and second grade project. Watch a video of the book here:
Then watch a short interview with Carson Ellis and see her very own home!
Also, CLICK HERE to see some really cool homes from around the world! And, since I can't get enough of these really cool homes, here's another video about houses around the world. You won't believe the treehouse in this movie!

Kindergarten Collages inspired by "Perfect Square"
Kindergarten Artists read "Perfect Square" by Michael Hall.
Last week, while learning about color mixing, we used watercolor paints to paint squares of paper. Today, Kindergarten artists were challenged to see what they could turn their painted squares into. Is it a bird or a plane? Grass or a tree? A garden, a mouth, a window or a ghost?

Morning Mindfulness Painting to Music
"Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally" - Jon Kabat-Zinn
Our Morning Mindfulness group practiced mindfulness through art by painting to music. We tried to quiet our internal judges and be in the moment while creating. We focused on the process of creating, rather than the finished product. We experimented with different painting techniques that incorporate use of body or breath. Overall, we felt focused, creative and calm while creating beautiful artwork.

Kindergarten art inspired by the book "Art" by Patrick McDonnell
Kindergarten Artists read the book "Art," by Patrick McDonnell. They were inspired by Art, the main character of the book, to create using a variety of arts media, including watercolor, colored pencils and markers. We made art strips to display multiple pieces.

"With My Own Two Hands..."
Check out this video of Ben Harper singing "With My Own Two Hands."
What can you do with your own two hand to make our world a better place? Each of us has the ability to make small differences that change our world.
First and second graders watched Ben Harper sing "With My Own Two Hands," then talked about ways that they can make a difference in their world. They also learned to sing this song in music class and will be performing it at our school concert this week.

Modern Art
Have you seen the internet quiz "Can you tell the difference between Modern Art and Paintings by Toddlers?" (Disclaimer: this site may contain other links that may not be appropriate for all ages)
As controversial as it may be to compare modern and contemporary art pieces to artwork by three-year-olds, I found this hilarious. I also nailed it. As an elementary art teacher and mom to a toddler, I guess I can really sniff out the "modern art" vs. the finger painting. Whether you are a defender of modern art or really don't get it, see how you do on this quiz.
In the meantime... if these beautiful watercolor paintings made by our Kindergarten artists were billed as "Modern Art," I doubt anyone would question it.
