Dragons for Chinese New Year

Every Chinese New Year Parade ends with a Dragon Dance. The parades start on New Year's Day and continue for the next fifteen days until the end of the festivities with the Lantern Festival.

The Dragon Parade is a highlight of the festivities. The Dragon represents wisdom, power, and wealth and a very important aspect of Chinese Culture. It is also said that the Dragon Dance performed on New Year's Day scares away the evil spirits and all the bad luck with them...

During the Dance, a dozen or so performers hold the dragon up on poles. They raise and lower the Dragon making him "dance" as they wind through the masses to the sounds of horns, drums and gongs. (from http://www.china-family-adventure.com/dragon-dance.html)

Here is a Dragon Puppet the was used in a Chinese New Year parade.

First and second grade artists looked at many examples of Chinese Dragons and then drew their own using construction paper crayons and oil pastels. 

Monster Draw!

 

First and second grade artists loved drawing MONSTERS! We used the game Monster Draw as our inspiration and we read "Jeremy Draws a Monster," by Peter McCarty.  We used Gel markers on black paper and colored pencils on white cardstock.

Year of the Dragon

 2012 is the Chinese Year of the Dragon!  Third and Fourth grade artists used watercolor paints to draw dragons.  We talked about TEXTURE and adding lots of detail.

Ugly Dolls on Display!

Come see the Not-so-Ugly Dolls made by fifth and sixth graders!  They are on display in the lobby.

Ugly Dolls!

Fifth and sixth graders designed their very own Ugly Dolls!  We used felt and practiced our sewing skills to make these funny little friends.  Students also wrote about their Ugly Doll's personality and likes and dislikes.

Not so Ugly Dolls!

 Fifth and sixth grade artists are creating original Ugly Dolls!  They are learning about symmetry in their classroom, so this project ties in very nicely.

We started by folding a piece of free draw paper in half the tall way and drawing half of a monster shape along the fold.  Then we cut them out and traced the monster onto colored paper.  We glued our ugly dolls onto black paper and used scrap paper and black markers to add simple details to the faces.

The next phase of the project is to make an Ugly Doll out of felt.  We traced the monster onto two sheets of felt, then cut them out.  We used scraps of felt to add details to the doll and then sewed the two pieces together with whip stitch.  We stuffed the Ugly Dolls with filling.

Each artist named his or her not-so-Ugly Doll and came up with character traits and a short story about the monster.
