Adventure Ship Scratch Boards inspired by Paul Klee

First and second grade artists looked at Paul Klee's painting of the "Adventure Ship." We made our own scratch boards with a think layer of construction paper crayons covered with two coats of black tempera paints.  Then we scratched our original "Adevnture Ships" onto the scratch boards.

Paul Klee City Collaborative Mural

First and second graders learned about Paul Klee's painting "Castle and Sun," and created collages inspired by this painting. Click here to see this work!  Then we used cardboard scraps to construct this collaborative city mural.

Inspired by Paul Klee's "Castle and Sun"

First and second grade artists looked at "Castle and Sun" by Swiss artist Paul Klee.  Before we learned the title of this painting, we talked about what we saw- cities, villages, crayons, moon, houses, and of course a castle.
This painting is made up of geometric shapes.  These are shapes that follow rules.  The other type of shapes are called organic shapes.  These are shapes that don't follow rules.
We used cut paper geometric shapes to build our castles or villages. We imagined that the paper shapes were building blocks and figured out how to fill the page and add details. The final step was to outline and add detail in black or white.

Taking a Dot for a Walk : Artwork Inspired by Paul Klee's "Groom'sArrival"

First and second grade artists looked at Paul Klee's painting "Groom's Arrival."  Students pointed out how the shapes made a figure and shared what this figure made them think of.     Paul Klee was a Swiss-German artist who was most influenced by the Expressionist, Cubist and Surrealist art movements.

We discussed Klee's quote "A drawing is simply a line going for a walk" and that "A line is a dot going for a walk."
Here's a video of more of Paul Klee's paintings.  What words come to mind as you observe his work?

Students created their own pieces by taking a line for a walk across red construction paper, then looking for closed shapes to fill in with construction paper crayons.  Some students found faces, figures or animals in their shapes.  This lesson provided us with an opportunity to discuss what high quality work looks like when coloring with crayons.

Inspired by "Groom's Arrival" by Paul Klee

Kindergarten artists looked at Paul Klee's piece "Groom's Arrival."  We observed how this picture was made with mostly continuous lines and how each closed space was filled completely with color.  Kindergartners used oil pastels to create a picture in the style of Paul Klee's painting.

Inspired by Paul Klee's "Castle and Sun" Painting

First and second grade artists looked at the painting "Castle and Sun" by Paul Klee (prounouced "clay").  Before learning the title of the painting, students guessed what it could be a picture of and named the shapes that they saw.  Students used cardstock shape tracers to "build" their own castles in the style of Paul Klee.  We used tempera paints to paint the shapes that made up their castles.  I added a little white paint to each color to make it show up better against the black paper.  As a final touch, artists used an oil pastel to trace around all of the shapes in their castles.
