Finger painting! To anyone who thinks that Elementary Art is all about finger painting, I give you these masterpieces.
First and second graders studied the civil rights movement in class? We used a high contrast photo of Martin Luther King Jr., projected onto large paper. Using only our fingers, we painted each portrait using two shades of paint. We looked at examples of Andy Warhol's colorful prints as our inspiration for our repeated MLK Jr. portraits. These will be displayed at Friday's civil rights assembly, led by Mr. Young's class.
This is the blog for the Waitsfield Elementary School Art Program in Waitsfield Vermont. This site is maintained by Nora McDonough. It contains photographs and information about past and current art projects completed at all levels, K-6.

Martin Luther King Jr. Portrait by grades 1 & 2
February is Black History Month. First and second grade artists worked collaboratively on these large-scale portraits of Martin Luther King Jr. We used a projection of the image from www.artprojectsforkids.com. Artists printed black and gray paint with their fingertips to create the picture.

Inspired by Romare Bearden's Jazz Collages
First and second graders learned about artist Romare Bearden. Bearden lived in Harelm during the birth of the jazz age. Many of his mixed media collages show jazz musicians and dancers. We looked at many of Bearden's jazz collages and then created our own using a variety of materials.
