Developing your Character Strengths

(Click on the image to enlarge the Periodic Table of Character Strengths)

*What are five character strengths of yours?
*Who do you admire and why?
*Before you act, think: Does this reflect this who I am and who I want to be?

Elmer the elephant

Kindergarten artists read "Elmer," by David McKee.  This is a classic story about a patchwork elephant who wishes he were like all of the other elephants.  He learns to celebrate and appreciate his differences.

Kindergarten artists used cut painted paper to create their patchwork Elmer elephants.  We also painted large Elmers as a group.

Color wheels

Students in grades 3 and 4 are learning to mix all colors on the color wheel using the three primary colors. We are practicing using proper color names in art class, ie. "yellow-green" versus "light-ish yellowy green-ish."

Kindergarten Kandinskys

KThis lesson has become a Kindergarten "rite of passage" in the art room.   I use it nearly every year, almost always with fantastic results.  I recently was pleased to discover that when a group of first and second graders saw the painting "Squares with Concentric Circles," they immediately recognized it and remembered this lesson.

Kindergarten artists created their own Kandinsky-inspired circle drawings using oil pastel and liquid watercolor.
