Visit to a Really Fun Art Room

Today the art teachers in our district met at Crossett Brook Middle School in Nan Hathaway's art room.  Nan has stations set up all around the room to allow for student choice.  I love this space and felt immediately inspired upon entering this room.  Then we started talking about assessment for three hours...
Idea books at each station with photographs of previous student work
Quotes and questions all around the art room
What is the purpose of art?
Organization is key!

Where do artists get their ideas?

After school art club: painted wooded bowls

Our after school art club has painted these beautiful turned wooden bowls, generously donated by Andrew Pearce and the Granville Bowl Mill.  We talked about analogous colors and color gradient.  After a lot of sanding and one or two coats of acrylic paint, we painted the bowls with several coats of a food-safe poly.  Each student in the club will take a bowl home.  We also will make two group bowls that we will raffle or sell to raise money for a local charity.

Lines and patterns

Kindergarten students helped make last weekend's "Country Christmas" festive with these colorful decorations. We practiced making different types of lines and patterns and experimented with the watercolor resist technique.

United States Quarters by Grades 3 & 4

Third and fourth graders are studying the United States of America.  Each student is a member of a group that is focusing on one region of the country.  Students chose states from their regions and recreated the state quarters.  We used the U.S. Mint Education web page to see what the quarters look like.  Students did not trace and used their artistic licenses to choose colors for their quarters.
